The Technical Qualification (TQ) forms part of the new T Level study
programme. The purpose of the Level 3 Technical Qualification is to ensure
students have the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to progress into
skilled employment or higher level technical training or study in the education
and childcare sector.
T level students at Leeds City College will have access to state of the art
facilities, specialist teaching staff and excellent employer networks plus
access to progression opportunities within Higher Level and Degree
Apprenticeships. Areas such as Forest Schools environments, bespoke practical
kitchen, sensory room, flexible study areas and digital resources are being
developed for our new T level students.
Who is this course for?
The Technical Qualification is primarily aimed at post 16 year old students who wish to progress into the education and childcare sector. This qualification will equip young people with the knowledge, skills and behaviours they need to enter skilled employment. The occupational specialisms are:
- Early Years Educator
- Assisting Teaching
This technical qualification will support students on a range of progression routes including employment, Higher Education, University and Higher Apprenticeships.

ROUTE 1 Occupational Specialism – Early Years Educator
- Support and promote children’s play, development and early education
- Develop relationships with children to facilitate their development
- Plan, provide and review care, play and educational opportunities to enable children to progress
- Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children
- Work in partnership with colleagues, parents, carers and other professionals to support children’s development
ROUTE 2 Occupational Specialism – Assisting Teaching
- Support the class Teacher to enhance children’s education, individually and in groups
- Plan, provide and review educational opportunities in collaboration with Teachers and other adults
- Safeguard and promote the health, safety and wellbeing of children and young people
- Recognise, adapt and respond to individual children’s needs, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), to support development and access to the curriculum

The outline content for this qualification was devised by T Level panels. The panels consisted of employers and industry stakeholders.
We have worked in partnership with employers and other stakeholders to elaborate the content further, create the assessments and set the standards to ensure students achieve the level of competence needed to enter skilled employment.
Progression to higher-level studies
This qualification aims to provide students with a number of progression options, including higher-level studies at University or FE colleges. The skills required to progress to higher academic studies are different from those required at Levels 1 and 2. Level 3 qualifications enable the development of these skills. Although there is no single definition of higher-level learning skills, they include:

- supporting points with evidence
- self-directed study
- thinking for yourself
- analysing and synthesising information/materials
- critical thinking and problem solving
- working collaboratively
- reflecting upon learning and identifying improvements
- presenting information in written and verbal formats.
- Externally marked assignments

- Successful work placement assessments
Students who achieve this qualification could progress to the following, depending on their chosen Occupational Specialism:

Course Fee (16-18)
T Levels offer students a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience during an industry placement. Industry placements are intended to provide students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for skilled employment in their chosen occupation which are less easily attainable by doing a qualification alone.
T Levels are an alternative to A levels, apprenticeships and other 16 to 19 courses. Equivalent to 3 A levels, a T Level focuses on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher study or apprenticeships. Your T Level will be worth UCAS points – a T Level Distinction* is worth the same as 3 A levels at A* – and will be recognised by universities and other education providers so you can choose to continue studying if you wish.
When you pass your T Level, you will get a nationally recognised certificate showing the overall grade you achieved - pass, merit, distinction or distinction*. It will also give details of what you learned on the course to help you move into skilled employment or a higher apprenticeship.
