Business and Staff Development

At Leeds City College, we are transforming the way we meet small and large employer needs in the Leeds City Region and beyond.

Following investment in a new labour market intelligence tool (EMSI Analyst) and by working closely with local employers and partners, the college is able to better understand the local economy and skills gaps. As a result, we are widening our curriculum offer by designing new industry-recognised qualifications and training for businesses to support development and growth.

What can we do for businesses?

We’re constantly looking to support businesses and expand our portfolio of partnerships. From upskilling your staff to increasing collaboration between businesses and training providers, there are plenty of ways we can help you.

Work experience and industry placements

We can provide you with enthusiastic students who are looking to gain work experience with industry employers. We offer a full work experience programme (detailed below) where you can offer work experience placements, work tasters, or industry placements.

There are numerous benefits to taking on a student for work experience. First, you will be able to engage your staff, boost team morale and give your staff the opportunity to show leadership qualities. You can improve your reputation as an employer, increase the pool of talented industry candidates and narrow the skills gap. Plus, it doesn’t cost you financially!

What can businesses do for us?

There are plenty of ways for you and your business to get involved. From mentoring the next generation to designing courses that suit your industry requirements, we value your input.

Formulate the workforce of the future

Ensure our students develop the skills and qualities that you are looking for in your future workforce. You can offer work experience placements, industry placements and work taster sessions to ensure our students are workplace-ready. Alternatively, you can share your industry insight through talks, mock interviews and mentoring.

Help design courses

Our curriculum areas are always open to input from local employers. Some of our course offerings are delivered by both the college and organisations to integrate industry knowledge and experience. Additionally, some of our courses have modules tailored to specific industry requirements based on feedback from local employers. We are open to suggestions and welcome your thoughts.

Be part of our work experience programme

Offer work experience placements, work tasters or industry placements and provide our students with valuable industry experience. Work experience placements can be offered on a short-term (usually one to two weeks) and unpaid basis. Work taster opportunities are a one-off unique experience where students can visit your workplace for a few hours to gain an insight into your business.

Industry placements are usually substantial (averaging 50 days per year) and unpaid. They allow students to gain real life experience of their chosen industry and give you the opportunity to inspire their future. If you were to offer this you would receive extensive support from the college.

Provide mentoring to our students

Support our students by mentoring them either in college or your workplace. This can be on a one-to-one or group basis. You can decide on the duration and frequency and can rely on us to build a bespoke programme around your needs.

Deliver talks to our students

There are several opportunities throughout the academic year to deliver talks or workshops to students. Talks can be delivered in a classroom environment or as part of a careers events. Talks can be specific to your industry or can focus on general employability skills.

We have a dedicated business development team who can discuss with you the requirements for your business. We also offer a free training consultation service to businesses.
